Lemon Rice - The Yellow Rice

Here is how I prepare Lemon Rice…..My son’s favorite , the yellow rice……

To make Lemon Rice :
1. Take 2 cup of already cooked rice. To it , add salt to taste and lemon juice of 2 lemon. Mix it thoroughly and keep it aside.
2. Chop 2 onions and slit 2 green chilies, 2-3 dry red chillies, some curry leaves for seasoning. Can also add some groundnut and pottu (chutney) kadalai and some vegetables (grated carrot or chopped beans)..Here I've not added.
3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai, add 1 tbsp mustard seed, few uzhudu dhal seed, few kadala paruppu. Then add groundnut and pottu (chutney) kadalai and stir fry. Sim the burner so that these seeds do not get charred. When the seeds change the color to light brown, add 2 onions chopped and fry it until they are slightly golden. Add curry leaves and stir.
4.Then add the rice to the above mix, and mix it well thoroughly (sim the burner).

Tatadaaaaaaaaaaaaa.................Lemon Rice is ready!!!!!

A day at Hill Palace Museum, Thripunithura

My hubby was on one of his official cochin trip and he decided to take the family also along with him this time…..Being a keralite by birth, I hardly been to any places in Kerala except my native town, Thrissur and married to my hubby whose native town is Palghat, I’ve been to couple of houses there…..Hardly visited any places…except Guruvayoor, couple of times…..
We stayed in Cochin for 3 days…My hubby leaves to office in the morning to visit his customer and plant ….my children and me alone in the hotel …watching TV…eating lunch from the hotel's restaurant.... the typical kerala dishes…cooked in coconut milk, coconut oil….calling the “Room services” 5 times a day..to clean up the mess my children has done…tearing papers….spreading the whole place with bit and pieces of paper….killing time someway or the other…..Evening we go out for dinner or the nearby park…….On hearing my pathetic situation and my sulking face, my pragmatic hubby decided to drop us off at Hill Palace Museum, Thripunithura, ½ km drive from our hotel the next day…..and he is off to his work once again…..We, three of us, climbed all the steps to reach the hill top..and my children got exhausted…They asked me to carry them on my hips….I tried to cajole them and divert their attention to flowers and garden around…My son was not interested to go inside the museum…I can understand…that it is way above their age to appreciate the archeological property of our historic country…But he got freshed when he saw a Big elephant structure right in front of the museum…..Waah!!! he was shouting at the top of his voice attracting other visitors around..I have to hush him always….We went from one room to another…looking at the ancient coins, the ornaments…my daughter says “I want this ear ring ammey”…”It is diamond, da..costly…we can’t afford…”…She continues..”But I liked it”…The lady standing next to me gave a big smile to me hearing my daughter’s callous request…..We moved to another room with lots of porcelain vessels…mostly Chinese….one of it was broken/cracked…my son says “Pottiya paathram..enda ividey vechirikkiyunu….thuurakallaiaandu….aiiyee…”..( Broken vessel..why have they kept here?..without throwing….)….”Sabthathillu samsarikenda, Monu…Avaru pidichu porathakkum namalley..”..(Don’t speak loudly…they will throw us out)…He was not convinced with my answer….” The next room had some costume display of King’s and Queens..with the hood…My son exclaimed..”Nooku ammey….chudithaar…ammey dey polla…..thoppi vechirukkinu…”..(look amma, chudithaar..similar to yours….”…”Shhhhhh”…I go…On seeing the knife displays …my son wants knife..”Ennekku eduthu tha ma…”…(Give me the knife)…I dragged him out of the room……My daughter was still sulking that she didn’t get her ear-ring…..Appa!!! I was envious of my hubby…Why me alone?...... Another room had this 'Simhasana' (the throne or the king's chair)….My son wanted to sit on that…”Chair ammey…red colour seat…”…yeah..yeah..“Nammukkum onu vanghichu vekkiyam….”..(We will buy one for our house..)…”Seri seri…Acchan aduthu parayam namukku vedichutharan”…(yes, yes…We will say to Acchan to buy one for us…)..My children now only realized that Acchan is not around to visit the museum…Their focus turned to Acchan…”evidey anu acchan, ammey?” (Where is acchan, amma?)….”Office”….We reached the final exit…my son once again got earthed near the entrance where this big elephant..Nandi…statue was there…luckily, it was fenced by the movable post…my son’s enthusiasm …one of the post down tumbling with a loud noise “thud”…I looked around to see if any official people is around…I tried to lift the post to keep it back in its position…It’s hardly moving…turned all the direction to see if someone had seen this…Then we 3 vanished in a split of a second…and reappeared near the “footwear” collection counter…..My face turned towards the museum entrance in case if some official person is following us….No one …Grt8 escape….We took some pictures…..in front of the tharavadu…..and took the stairs once again back…My children got exhausted by then…I offered some chocolates and biscuits and water…Called up my dear hubby to find out his position…..he says “will be back in 1 hour”…”1 hour”…What am I to do there with 2 “about-to-get-restless” kids?......I looked around and my curious eye darted on the welcome sign of “children’s park”…ok….We hurriedly entered the park…hardly occupied by children….few love pairs here and there…busy 'tête-à-tête ing….My kids started with their enquiring questions about them %^%^&@#$@$…We went to another corner of the park leaving some privacy for the lovers….swing, slides, and what not….and killed time till my hubby turned up to take us back to the hotel……

Aval Uppuma and Carrot Chutney

(Breakfast : Aval Uppuma with Carrot chutney)
It’s Good Friday today…10/04/2009…Being an early riser, my eyes opened sharply at 6 0’clock in the morning with no hesitation...….with a nagging thought that I’ve to go to office when my dear hubby has a holiday and dear children is enjoying their summer vacation…..I was in no mood to get up from my cousy bed….But had to at least to open the gate for my cook…….I picked up the milk packets and newspaper scattered in the front porch…..my usual ritual in the morning……I waited and waited till 7 o’clock for my cook…She didn’t turn up…me scratching my head entered the kitchen to do some breakfast for the family… …It’s been long time since I’ve cooked a real full course…..have become a lazy bum…..I settled myself to cook some Aval uppuma and chutney for breakfast…….

To make Aval Uppuma :
1. Take 2 cup of Aval and wash it thoroughly with water 2-3 times. Sieve the washed Aval so that water drains off completely. Make sure the Aval should not become more soggy.
2. Add 1tsp of salt to this soaked Aval and mix thoroughly so that it is equally distributed. Keep it aside for 5 minutes.
3. In the mean time, Chop 3 large Green bell Peppers/Capsicums into smaller pieces. Then chop 2 tomatoes and 2 onions and slit 2 green chilies, some curry leaves for seasoning.

4. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai, add 1 tbsp mustard seed, few uzhudu dhal seed, few kadala paruppu. Sim the burner so that these seeds do not get charred. When the seeds change the color to light brown, add 2 onions chopped and fry it until they are slightly golden. Add curry leaves and stir. Then add 2 chopped tomatoes to the mix and stir fry. Then add the chopped capsicums and fry for a minute or 2 till it is soft.
5.Then add the soaked Aval to the above mix, and mix it well thoroughly (sim the burner). Later you can mix some grated coconut over it. Aval uppuma is ready!!!!!

To make Carrot-chutney:
1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai, add few uzhudu dhal seed and few kadala paruppu. Sim the burner so that these dhal seeds do not get charred. When the seeds change the color to light brown, add 2 onions chopped and 2 chopped tomatoes, 2 green chilly and 1 big chopped carrot. Fry it till it becomes soft. Add salt to taste. Let it cool down.
2. Grind the above mix.

3. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai, add few mustard seed. Allow it to burst. Then add the curry leaves and immediately remove from the burner. Pour it on the grinded mix.

Viola!!! Carrot chutney …..
Aval Uppuma and Carrot Chutney ...I'm sending to Neha's "FIC-Red and Green", event started by Harini and to Sunshinemom of Tongue Ticklers

Mistakes of my life…..

Don’t think that I’m going to give a review of this book that I read last week…for various reasons…1. I’m not good at it…2. I’m not that great reader of books to pass on a comment/criticize a book….3. I’m not worth to judge other’s work…I always take the appreciation side of any effort…..I always appreciate the effort, time, and energy that any individual for that matter, be of any age group, sex, or whatever category you can think of…..

Coming to the point, Chetan uses simple lucid English words which any school kid could understand…The story is good……pretty straight revolving on “CRICKET… POLITICS… RELIGION… LOVE… EMOTIONS… “…lives of an Indian middle class family…….was not able to enjoy whatever he has mentioned about Gujarathi snacks and all…..He has touched about some real incidence like twin tower demolition, the Godhra havoc and earthquakes in Gujarat that happened really in this world…He has also used the Australian slang’s…..But I didn’t appreciate the love story that he has intertwined in his book… out of scope…could have deferred pre-marital sex though…. didn’t appreciate this at all…..Anyways, it is a book written to be sold like hot-cakes…………

I think I gave my opinion about this book……which comes down to the next thought…what was my 3 mistakes in life?......I asked my hubby..and he goes..” Marriage…”…Hahaha….”me too, me too”…..The typical answer of any “Spouse”….which is the next book I’ve started reading…I’ve read this before…..It is a good read, though, to be revisited often...just to revive the concept of institution called "Marriage"....………
