Getting hair cut for kids is a big task by itself….Especially my daughter..She refuses to get her hair cut nowadays…She frowns, cries, acts cranky… She is fascinated to have long hair….I’ve to bribe her with some usual list of favourite choclates or dress or dolls…that I will get this and that….She goes “I want to have long hair like DJ Harini”…..I believe she is envious of this long haired girl..which I realized recently when my children and me went to attend their classmate’s birthday party….I told my daughter “Vavey, look at DJ’s hair..Long hair she has ..”..She gave a unconcerned look at me…”yeah..”….I could see that jealousiness burning in her eyes.….
I play the role of barber when they were small babies. After their 1 st years, it was pretty difficult for me to take control ..they keep moving their head …and worse still, when the hair falls on their face and mouth…Lost patience and I quit!!!!
The local Men’s barber shop is the next stop we 4 go as family to have haircut….Wanna to join the party….swagatham…. The moment to go step into the shop…..my children become restless…..We parents are liberal…who goes first?..My son says “VAva..”..Same time my daughter screams out….They are scared by the look of scissors and barber too…Unfortunately, if the previous customer is of their same age and he/she also makes fuzzy and cries out…then that is the end of the whole effort….My dear hubby would make sure that only adults are customers…so that my children will get the glimpse of what is going on with their hair and head……ok, Next!!!
Ah! My daughter goes first..”Ladies first…”….She would be seated on a wooden plank which will be kept well over the handle’s of a typical hairstylist’s cushioned chair….she thinks herself as princess..high seated position so that she can see everything else below her…..He goes on with the water spray ..high speed one…”Close your eyes..”.. She immediately obeys….and the cutting with the scissors and comb..shuk shuk..clk…clk….and the hair falls over the face and inside the month…They move this side..I give a helping hand in holding their head in appropriate angles which would help the barber to greater extend…She comes out with the typical “Monkey’s cut”…”Mammatikuttiamma……”….remember Actor Salini’s style…I used to have that hairstyle still I was 10 yrs old….My uncle and aunty tease me with this name “Mammatikuttiamma….”…..
OK, Next…My son…the moment the hairstylist sprays the water…He starts bellowing…..Both my hubby and me have to hold his head….What a task…It will be like 3 of us on him….My daughter as the background music, keep on repeating this questions “Why Monu is crying?...”….”Is it paining for him?...I didn’t get pain…no blood..”..she goes on to pacify Monu…”Don’t get scared…No blood will come from hair…”….Monu will be reaching his zenith….face turned red…making 3 of us very difficult to get over this humongous task..his hair pieces equally all over our body…We are parents ..so can be tolerated..but the barber yells back at Monu…We will be like between the devil and deep sea…..it will take at minimum solid 30 -40 mintues for this whole struggle…At the end it is worth it for all us….except the hairstylist…He hates/dreads our family…our presence…”No not all ....Monu is far better than many other kids…”…replies with a grin…Those were the days when my children were very very small….The sob continues till he reach home and breaks out feeling his head with minimal hair…”emh…mudi poyi…mudi poyi”… (hair is gone….)…It goes on for another 10-15 mintues…until he stumble upon something else….
They have grown up….These days my daughter does not like to go to “Men’s” Saloon….She always accompanies me to the “Beauty Palour”…..place where gals have their hair cut..Ahha!!! and my Son goes to my hubby’s “Barber Shop”…hahaha!!!!....My hubby goes..”You pay a lot there just for trimming here and there….”….it is true…by 2 weeks, the hair comes back to the original length…My son comes back with a summer cut with just 2mm length on his head…close to clean shave…..worth the pay….
Now it is a different story all together…Hairstylist ..”which style you want?”….My son “Abbas..cut”….and he turns by himself to all possible angle …so charming guy…..This time my hubby made my daughter also to have her haircut at Men’s shop..She didn’t like it for various reasons …1. Men’s place 2. Her hair length is reduced from pretty 10 cm to 2mm…phew…3. She didn’t like it at all…..This time all the way back home, she and me were fighting like tom and jerry in the middle of the road….all passerby and shopkeepers watching us….”Enna ma…mudivettanadu pudikillaya…unga ponnukku?...” (Why ma?..didn’t like cutting hair for your daughter? “…Message explicitly displayed ….She continues…”Endey mudi otti tha…”…”Stick the cut hair with my hair…” …”within 1 week, it will grow, VAVEY”….Embrassed I was speeding my way to reach home fast with my head down…….My hubby hearing her cry came running out to the main road and he has to carry forcefully back home…..
